We constructed small chicken coops to accomodate improved-breed chickens. I think this project really shows how wasteful development projects can be if you try.

The unimproved-breed chickens, or criollos, don't need any special feed or housing. They forage just fine and require no out-of-pocket investment.

Improved breed chickens, unlike criollos, lay eggs regularly and mature much more quickly. But they require special feed that poor people can't afford, and which costs more than the market value of the meat and eggs. They also need special coops. My Peace Corps supervisor insisted this was a good idea, but I still think its a sham.
